Colour Theory: CITRUS

by Cosette on October 29, 2021

From the SS22 runways to Pantone (who selected ‘Illuminating Yellow’ as a colour of the year for 2021), summer is looking bright across vibrant oranges and yellows. Here’s our guide to this season's upbeat colour mood.

What We Love: Colour Theory Citrus

With shade names like butter, lemon, orange and peach being thrown around at such a rate this season, you’d be forgiven thinking we’re compiling a shopping list. In their previous iterations, yellow and orange can be tricky shades to master - thankfully, these new season offerings upped the wearability factor to less acidic, more delicate tones, in creamier shades that could almost operate under the guise of a playful neutral alongside their zingier counterparts (fans of bold colour - don’t worry, you won’t go unnoticed!).

For those yet to dip their toe into these colourways, try lighter tones first - they pair beautifully back with cream and crisp whites to light grey and denim. Bottega Veneta’s Chain Cassette in Butter is the perfect case in point: light enough to make a statement without overpowering a minimalist’s wardrobe.

Chloé’s Mini Chloe C Bag in the most delicious shade of milky orange is reminiscent of candy, yet toughened up with hardware for that signature Chloé masculine/feminine feel - a standout for those of us who shy away from anything too saccharine sweet.

Prefer to go incognito? Givenchy has you covered - the Denim Medium Bond Shopper features a splash of yellow across the logo, with a secret yellow zippered pouch inside if that’s more your speed.

Onto the more saturated end of the spectrum, aim to be adventurous - who doesn’t need a colour-driven jolt of wardrobe positivity?

Outfit-wise, rich, bold oranges and not-so-mellow yellows command attention, so clean neutrals are a given (camel against yellow for example is a chic yet unexpected combination), but look to cooler shades if you’re willing to experiment - icy pastel blue against a vibrant orange works beautifully, as does Kelly green and teal with yellow.

First up: Celine’s Small 16 Bag is as classic citron as you can get, in a sophisticated silhouette that allows for ultimate versatility.

Or look to this smile-inducing bite size Jacquemus Le Chiquito Mini in an energetic orange hue:

Burberry’s Mini Leather Half Cube bag ticks all our boxes with this burst of colour in a slightly sculptural, graphic shape:

Or finally, Prada’s Nappa Leather Signaux Bag in a luxurious Marigold yellow is on high rotation.
